About this institute

The structural characterization division in CINTS offers total solution for material-related problems in both academia and industries by making use of state-of-art technologies including aberration corrected microscopy. The division is based in the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) in Tohoku university. IMR was founded by Professor Kotaro Honda in 1916, who was one of the promoter for corporation between university and industry. The activities of CINTS are accordingly supported by the Office of Corporative Research and Development in the university.
In CINTS, a number of practical problems in industry have been critically scrutinized from viewpoints of fundamental materials science, leading to deep understanding on the phenomena and thereby substantial improvements. Our presence also serves to create an atmosphere, where young researchers in academic circles can observe real-world problems, which then provide them an opportunity to absorb know-how to become true scientist and engineer. We also offer various seminars and open-labs to public, including students in junior-high and high schools to spread the wonders of materials world, thereby ultimately aiming to bring back worldwide the beauty of science.
Image of a precipitate in a magnesium (Mg) alloy obtained by a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). This work was done in support for Sendai National College of Technology, and awarded a prize in Japan Institute of Metals and Materials in 2006.
